The Sun Shooting was an event that occurred at the Parting Ball. The Scarlet Guard attempted to kill four members of the Silver Elite: Ellyn Macanthos, Reynald Iral, Belicos Lerolan, and Ptolemus Samos. They were targeted for their major roles in the Nortan government. The Scarlet Guard members involved were Kilorn, Walsh, Tristan, and Farley.
Description[]
The Scarlet Guard wanted to make a statement with their next attack, and asked Mare and Maven for targets whose deaths would cause major disruptions.
At the Parting Ball at the Hall of the Sun, the Scarlet Guard hid in the ballroom. They shoot their targets at the same time. Immediately, Mare used her electricon abilities to turn off the lights and the cameras in the ballroom, so that the Scarlet Guard could escape.
As Mare is working to keep the electricity off, she watches the chaos and panic. She notices that the Silver nobles are afraid. And that "for all their strength, all their power, they still know the meaning of fear. And a few bullets are all it takes to bring terror out in them."[1] She sees that Ellyn Macanthos, Reynald Iral, and Belicos Lerolan are all dead.
There's an explosion and Mare is scared and angry because she thinks the Scarlet Guard caused it, which was not part of the plan. It's revealed after the event that when Cal used his burner abilities, it ignited a gas leak under the floor, causing the explosion. Eight people were killed, including Belicos Lerolan's young, twin sons.
Unfortunately, the Scarlet Guard members are not able to escape as Cal and a group of Sentinels capture them and bring them to the dungeon to torture them for information.
Mare is forced to watch as Cal asks a Sentinel from House Gliacon to torture Farley. She uses her ability as a shiver to freeze Farley's blood in her arm so that sharp, red icicles pierce her skin, slicing every nerve in pain. Farley doesn't break. Another Sentinel, this time from House Skonos heals Farley's wounds so that the torture can begin again. Before the second round of torture can happen though, Ptolemus Samos storms into the dungeon looking for Evangeline. In his anger he uses his ability as a magnetron to spear Tristan through the chest with one of the metal bars of the cell. When he turns on Kilorn to do the same, Mare snaps and uses her electricon ability on Ptolemus, knocking him unconscious.
Later that night, Mare convinces Julian to help her get Farley, Walsh, and Kilorn to safety.
